LANDOVER, Md. (June 20, 2025) – Today, United Food & Commercial Workers Local 400 Union President Mark Federici released the following statement after Kroger announced plans to close 60 stores across the country, including four stores represented by UFCW Local 400:

“The communities served by our members at these stores will suffer as a direct result of Kroger prioritizing Wall Street investors over their customers and hard-working employees. Closing these stores will not only result in fewer good, union job opportunities, it will further limit food access in rural areas where there are few if any alternatives to buy groceries – all for a purported ‘modest financial benefit’ to the company.

“Instead of investing billions of dollars in buying its own stock and paying legal fees for a doomed merger with Albertsons, plus millions more in compensation for corporate executives, Kroger needs to invest in better compensation for associates, better staffing in stores, and making store improvements to better serve their customers. Hard-working store associates and the customers who depend on them should not be made to pay the price for Kroger’s decisions.

“While the company has agreed to place impacted associates at other locations, for many workers, the reality is these stores are too far from one another for a transfer to be practicable. Our union will do everything in our power to support our members through this difficult time and ensure they land on their feet.”

Kroger plans to close the following four stores represented by UFCW Local 400, along with dozens of others around the country:

Closing August 22, 2025:

  • Kroger #739 (2908 State St, Gassaway, WV 26624)
  • Kroger #239 (1904 Emmett Street, Charlottesville, Va 22901)

Closing September 19, 2025:

  • Kroger #255 (466 South Cummings Street, Abingdon, Va 24210)
  • Kroger #328 (1664 East Stone Drive, Kingsport, Tn 37660)
