UFCW Local 400 members at Giant Food and Safeway have voted to ratify extensions to their current union contracts.
The two-year extensions to our current collective bargaining agreements make the new expiration date October 27, 2029. The increase to the Tier 2 pension benefit will be retroactive to January 1, 2026. The effective date of other changes is listed in the highlight sheet, which you can download at the links below.
The new contracts:
- Increase Tier 2 pension benefit
- Maintain current H&W benefits with no changes to out-of-pocket costs through October 27, 2029
- Extend wage scales and annual increases for an additional two years
“During our contract negotiations in 2023, we committed to ongoing discussions with Giant and Safeway to come up with improvements to our pension benefits,” said UFCW Local 400 President Mark Federici. “By extending these contracts, we not only won those improvements, we also locked in our current pay raises and benefits to safeguard us from potential losses if the economy does not rebound.”
Voting on the new agreements took place in select stores over four days, February 9-12, 2026, and ballots were tabulated on Friday, February 13 by members of the bargaining committee and contract team. Members at Giant Food voted 855–28 and members at Safeway voted 750–19 in favor of ratifying the agreements as unanimously recommended by the bargaining committee.
