UNFI, the parent company of Shoppers Food, has announced plans to close four more Shoppers stores in the DMV region on November 8, 2025:

  • Capitol Heights, MD – 4801 Marlboro Pike, Capitol Heights, MD 20743
  • College Park, MD – 4720 Cherry Hill Rd, College Park, MD 20740
  • Germantown, MD – 18066 Mateny Rd, Germantown, MD 20874
  • Laurel, MD – 13600 Baltimore Ave, Laurel, MD 20707

Just before this announcement, the company abruptly closed two other stores. In fact, since UNFI purchased Shoppers as part of its acquisition of SuperValu in 2018, the company has closed more than 20 stores in the region! Public comments from the company have shown a lack of commitment to this market, their customers, and their employees.

This is no way to treat our union members and our communities. We deserve the stability of knowing that our stores will stay open and not be closed just to extract a stock bump or some short-term profit. We deserve a real investment in our community in return for the hard-earned dollars we spend at Shoppers.

Petition:

We, the undersigned, demand that United Natural Foods, Inc., the Rhode Island based company that owns Shoppers Food, keep our stores open. Shoppers stores provide good union jobs and are an anchor in our community. Closing our stores to create short-term profit for an out-of-state corporation is unacceptable and we won’t stand for it. Save our Shoppers!
