More than 25,000 workers from hundreds of stores in the region could go on strike over wages, healthcare and retirement benefits

WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 12, 2020) – Giant & Safeway workers have been in negotiations on a new union contract covering workers at all stores in the DMV area. After five months of talks, both companies are insisting on cuts to healthcare funding and retirement benefits, while freezing new workers at minimum wage in DC and Maryland.

On Wednesday, February 19, the unionized workers are holding a press conference and rally to announce a date to take a strike vote at Giant & Safeway if they do not have a fair contract. The date of the vote will be announced at the press conference. If workers vote to authorize a strike, more than 25,000 grocery workers at hundreds of stores in the region could go out on strike.
