Earlier this month, Department of Labor (DOL) Secretary Hilda Solis, the first Latina to serve in a Cabinet, decided to step down. Before joining the Obama Administration in 2009, Solis represented the Los Angeles area in Congress for eight years.
“Leaving the Department is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made, because I have taken our mission to heart,” she told the LATimes.
The mission of the DOL is to work on behalf of the country’s working families, overseeing OSHA, the ADA, FMLA and FLSA and many other federal laws that impact workers on a daily basis. So as a Local, as members, and as a labor movement we must pay close attention to who fills the vacancy.
