Last week was a busy one for Respect DC and Walmart Associates who are part of the Organization United for Respect at Walmart (OUR Walmart). The groups went to the Bethesda office of Marriott President Arne Sorenson, who also serves on the Walmart Board of Directors.
“OUR Walmart members want to talk to Mike Duke about the problems they see in their stores every day,” Respect DC members announced through a megaphone to the crowd.
Since June 2011, Walmart associates in OUR Walmart have been blocked at repeated attempts to meet with Walmart CEO Mike Duke. Hearing that Walmart board member Arne Sorenson was coming to town, protesters grabbed a megaphone, bucket-drums and whistles to make sure Sorenson got the message that they’re still waiting for a meeting. “Talk to Mike Duke,” blared one protester as others banged on buckets and cheered. “Let him know it is important for a CEO to listen to his workers!”

Sunday, Respect DC and 50 students from the United States Student Association Conference traveled to the Laurel, Md. Walmart to flash mob about the miniscule bonuses that associates just received for their holiday work while Walmart remains profitable. They are encouraging the customers at the Laurel Walmart to call the store manager and let him know that they stand with the associates. In addition, the associates who are members of OUR Walmart, are encouraging their fellow associates to sign a petition to tell Walmart they deserve to share in the successes of their company.
