For the past six months, more than 40 neighborhood organizations, workers’ advocates, community activists and clergy have worked together to develop the solution to the problems posed by Walmart’s plans to open four new stores in the District of Columbia.

Respect DC has crafted an Enforceable Community Benefits Agreement guaranteeing that Walmart raises our standard of living and improves our quality of life, rather than the opposite.DC Mayor Vincent Gray has said that he wants a community benefits agreement, too. But how can it be a community benefits agreement if the deal is negotiated by the mayor and Walmart without community input and without the community in the room?

That’s why RespectDC and the Living Wages, Healthy Communities Coalition is gathering in front of the Wilson Building to demand our seat at the table to negotiate an enforceable community benefits agreement that will make sure Walmart respects DC.
