The Prince George’s Chapter of Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) honored UFCW Local 400 for its dedication and support to the community for the past five years. The president of the chapter, McArthur Bishop presented the award to the board on December 21, 2010.
Martin Luther King, Jr. founded the SCLC in 1956. It operates on a national level with several chapters across the United States. The Conference bases its vision around Dr. King’s dream for America to be spiritually, morally, economically, and socially just and equal nation. According to the Prince George’s chapter’s website they strive to continue the philosophy and methods of non-violence of Dr. King by “emulating his principles, pursuing peace and justice through non-violent action, and educating to empower the people of Prince George’s County, Maryland, specifically, and the world, in general, for effective social, economical, political and spiritual change.”
SCLC has been an advocate for civil and social justice in the Prince George’s county community for years. The Conference has hosted oratorical sessions with youth, job fairs, food banks, and AIDS/HIV education awareness. More specifically, supporting the fight against Walmart in Capital Plaza.
