Local 400 Retiree Club

CONGRATULATIONS to the new Retiree Club President: Vera Harrison, 1991 Local 400 retiree.

Whether it’s learning about the issues, engaging in political action, enjoying one another’s company, or going to the race track, members of Local 400’s Retiree Club get a lot out of their participation and stay connected with their union.

The club has been in existence for decades and is now making a concerted effort to recruit additional members among Local 400’s thousands of retirees. Any Local 400 member who is 55 or older and has retired is welcome to join.

Harrison, now president,  joined the retiree club in September 2010, on the same day former president, Lizzie Corbin resigned. A couple of members encouraged Harrison to run for the position and after a vote it was official.

“I didn’t want to see the club abandoned or see certain jobs and positions and responsibility fall on the same members,” said Harrison. “I do beleive in everything the union stands for, I wanted to see if I could work to help increase the membership and the effectiveness of the retirees club, so we can do our part in keeping the union strong.”

“We are building a culture of activism at Local 400 and our retirees play a central role in this,” said Local 400 President Tom McNutt. “We need our retirees’ wisdom and experience. Their knowledge and advice. Their time and energy. And their deep dedication to our mission.

“The more retirees get involved, whether it’s participating in the retirees’ club, attending membership meetings, joining us in organizing outreach efforts, or assisting us in political and legislative action, the more they get back too,” McNutt said. “It’s empowering and invigorating. And it sets a model for our current members to emulate.”

The Retiree Club meets at 11:00 am on the first Wednesday of every month from September through May at Local 400 headquarters, 4301 Garden City Drive, Landover, Maryland. Meetings alternate between potlucks and regular business. Often, there are speakers on important issues such as health care and Social Security.
