Montgomery County Executive Ike Legget signs into law one of the nation’s strongest paid sick days policies.

After unanimously passing the county council last week, today, Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett officially signed into law one of the strongest paid sick days policies in the country. U.S. Secretary of Labor Tom Perez applauded the legislation during today’s press conference, saying a federal counterpart is now “a question of when, not why.”

The legislation provides every person working in the county an opportunity to earn one of hour of paid leave for every 30 hours of work, and workers can earn up to 56 hours of paid leave per year. The new law takes effect October 1, 2016 and affects an estimated 90,000 people employed in the county.
