UFCW Local 400 President Tom McNutt today issued the following statement on legislation introduced in the 2012 session of the Maryland General Assembly and spearheaded by the Maryland Health Care For All! Coalition to raise state taxes on cigars and smokeless tobacco to the same levels as cigarettes:

“Local 400 strongly supports the Maryland cigar and smokeless tobacco tax bill because it will save lives. With teen cigar smoking and smokeless tobacco use now rivaling teen cigarette use, this important legislation will sharply reduce these unhealthy and potentially lethal activities while also raising funds for state tobacco control and Medicaid programs. It’s a win-win on all sides of the ledger.

“We’re pleased the Baltimore Sun endorsed the bill, helping to build momentum for its passage, and grateful for the leadership role played by the Maryland Health Care For All! Coalition, of which Local 400 is a proud member.

“I believe nothing matters more than the health and well-being of our children and all state residents. This bill will greatly improve both. We urge the General Assembly to pass it during the current legislative session.”
